Background of the study
Obesity has emerged as a major public health concern globally, with sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy dietary habits contributing significantly to its prevalence. Among civil servants in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State, factors such as prolonged sitting, limited physical activity, and workplace stress have been identified as key contributors to the rising rates of obesity (Okoro, 2023). The prevalence of obesity among this demographic not only impacts individual health outcomes but also affects overall productivity and increases healthcare costs. Recent research emphasizes the importance of workplace health promotion and regular physical activity in mitigating obesity risks (Emem, 2024). However, a gap remains in understanding the specific factors influencing obesity among civil servants in Calabar. This study seeks to examine the prevalence and underlying determinants of obesity within this occupational group, considering both individual lifestyle factors and systemic workplace influences (Ibekwe, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Obesity among civil servants in Calabar Municipality poses a significant public health challenge, contributing to increased risks of chronic diseases and reduced workplace productivity. Despite awareness campaigns, high obesity rates persist, likely due to a combination of sedentary work environments and unhealthy eating habits. These conditions not only compromise the well-being of civil servants but also escalate healthcare expenditures and diminish overall work performance. There is an urgent need to investigate the prevalence and determinants of obesity in this population to inform targeted interventions (Okoro, 2023; Ibekwe, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To determine the prevalence of obesity among civil servants.

  2. To identify lifestyle and occupational factors contributing to obesity.

  3. To propose workplace interventions to reduce obesity rates.

Research questions:

  1. What is the prevalence of obesity among civil servants in Calabar Municipality?

  2. What factors are associated with obesity in this population?

  3. What interventions can effectively reduce obesity among civil servants?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Sedentary work environments significantly contribute to obesity.

  2. Unhealthy dietary habits are major determinants of obesity among civil servants.

  3. Workplace health promotion programs can reduce obesity rates.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates obesity among civil servants in Calabar, providing evidence-based recommendations to enhance workplace wellness programs. The findings will help mitigate health risks and improve productivity (Okoro, 2023; Emem, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is confined to examining obesity prevalence and determinants among civil servants in Calabar Municipality, focusing exclusively on workplace and individual lifestyle factors.

Definitions of terms:

  • Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat accumulation.

  • Civil Servants: Government employees working in administrative roles.

  • Workplace Interventions: Strategies implemented in work settings to improve health outcomes.
